Michelle Cvornjek Assistant Artistic Director for Chaban Chaban Ukrainian Dance Group of Thunder Bay is a leader in the development of Ukrainian dance and the preservation of Ukrainian heritage. This success stems from the efforts of the committed individuals who contribute their time, skill, and organizational resources to the Group. Open to dancers of all ages, from toddler to over 40, Chaban brings to audiences the beauty and spirit of Ukrainian culture and heritage through dance. Chaban offers an extensive repertoire of traditional and stylized Ukrainian dance from many regions of Ukraine. Chaban’s instructors have been trained in Ukraine, Canada, and the United States, many of whom have been trained and certified in dance curriculum from the Shumka Syllabus for Ukrainian Dance. Chaban’s Artistic Director, Cathy Paroschy Harris, holds certification as Ballet Master Coach and Choreographer from the Ukrainian Academy of Dance in Lviv, Ukraine. For over 40 years, Chaban has been making significant contributions to Ukrainian dance in the Thunder Bay community and has entertained and dazzled audiences throughout Canada, the United States, Spain, and Ukraine. Chaban is a not-for-profit organization that works closely with the community at festivals and charitable events and entertains crowds year-round with their performances. Chaban has long exemplified an outstanding group of dedicated and talented volunteer citizens, sharing their heritage and culture through the beautiful art, music and athleticism of Ukrainian dance. Chaban is highly regarded in its community, nationally and internationally for its creative preservation and interpretation of culture, tradition and dance. Although the past year has brought its share of challenges, Chaban, like many organizations, continued to engage its dancers and their families by beginning the dance season with modified and Covid-safe in-person rehearsals. In light of the new class format, our instructors were faced with the challenge of adapting barre exercises and traditional choreography to ensure dancer safety. After a few short months in the studio, Chaban transitioned to virtual dance classes, which focused mainly on dancer conditioning and development of technique. The ability of both our instructors and dancers to rise to the occasion of yet another new way of teaching and learning is a testament to their skill and dedication to the Group. Some of Chaban’s instructors also participated in virtual professional development sessions offered through various Ukrainian dance communities in both Canada and Ukraine. Although Chaban could not celebrate its 40th anniversary in 2019/2020, it is the hope that we can grace the stage next season and celebrate our 40th (+2) anniversary! Chaban is hoping to safely return to the studio in person in the fall to kick off a new season, so we invite anyone interested in learning Ukrainian dance to join our dance community. Previous dance experience is not necessary - just the desire to learn Ukrainian dance!
